description=The Boeing Model 377 "Stratocruiser" is the plane that launched Boeing on the way to many years of dominance in the commercial airliner market. Based on the airframe of the B29 bomber, it was roomy and luxurious, at a time when only the rich could afford to fly. It could fly higher and faster than any other airliner of the period. United Air Lines first started service with the Stratocruiser on January 15, 1950 with routes from San Francisco to Honolulu. Average flight time to Hawaii was 10 hours, during which passengers enjoyed cocktails, champagne, and multi-course meals. This was the last livery the United "Mainliner Stratocruiser" wore before being sold to BOAC in 1954. They were replaced by the newer Douglas DC-7's.
